The Drummond pedal lathe.
John Balmond has recently restored the Drummond pedal lathe. This came to us a few months ago from The Acton Scott Historic Working Farm at Church Stretton in exchange for another piece of machinery.
It is worked by pressing the pedal at the bottom which in turn is connected to the flywheel and then by belt to the actual spindle.
When we first looked at the lathe we were concern as to whether the pedal would crush you toes if you placed them in the wrong place when the pedal was going down under the force of the flywheel. However we had no reason to worry as it has a device that saves any injuries!
The lathe has several speeds which can be changed by the belt being put onto different parts of the flywheel. Further variations in speed being down to the amount of push from your foot!
